Smooth Operation of Electric Forklifts

Smooth driving of an electric forklift is a core requirement for ensuring operational safety and extending equipment service life. It should be carried out by integrating three aspects: operational specifications, equipment characteristics, and environmental judgment. The specific methods are as follows:

Starting and Accelerating: Smooth and Gradual, Avoid Impact

  1. Before starting, confirm that the gear is in neutral, the forks are lowered to a safe height of 10–20 cm above the ground, the handbrake is released, and check that there are no personnel or obstacles in the surrounding area.
  2. Turn the acceleration handle (or press the accelerator pedal) slowly, and avoid instantaneous full-load acceleration. Electric forklift motors have high torque; sudden acceleration can cause the vehicle body to pitch forward, the goods on the forks to shake, and at the same time, intensify battery discharge and wear of transmission components.
  3. If starting with a load, perform a small test acceleration first, and then increase the speed at a constant rate after confirming the goods are stable.

Driving and Steering: Maintain Constant Speed, Steer at Small Angles

  1. Keep driving straight at a constant speed during operation, and avoid frequent acceleration and deceleration. Reduce speed in advance when passing through narrow aisles and corners, and control the speed to walking pace (≤5 km/h).
  2. Adhere to the principle of small-angle and slow steering. Never make sharp turns at high speeds, as this may easily cause vehicle sideslip and cargo overturning. When steering with a load, further reduce the speed to ensure the stability of the center of gravity of both the forks and the goods.
  3. Pay attention to the turning radius characteristics of electric forklifts. Rear-wheel steering models will have tail swing when turning; reserve sufficient safe space to avoid scratching shelves or walls.

Braking and Parking: Predict in Advance, Operate Gently

  1. Before braking, release the acceleration handle in advance to decelerate using motor regenerative braking, then lightly press the brake pedal. Sudden braking is strictly prohibited. Sudden braking can cause goods to surge forward and the battery to experience instantaneous high-current feedback, which affects battery service life.
  2. Choose a flat and firm ground for parking, and avoid long-term parking on slopes. After parking, fully lower the forks to the ground, shift to neutral, engage the handbrake, and turn off the power supply.
  3. If stopping temporarily on a ramp, in addition to engaging the handbrake, use wheel chocks to secure the wheels and prevent slipping.

Special Working Conditions: Targeted Vehicle Control, Avoid Risks

  1. Driving with load: Keep the center of gravity of the goods low and centered; match the fork spacing to the width of the goods. Overloading or uneven loading is strictly prohibited. Avoid sharp turns and sudden braking during driving, and pass over bumpy roads at low speed.
  2. Driving without load: Keep the forks 10–20 cm above the ground; never drag them fully on the ground to prevent wear of the forks and the floor surface. High-speed coasting with no load is prohibited.
  3. Wet/slippery ground: Reduce speed, increase braking distance, avoid sharp turns and emergency braking to prevent wheel skidding.

Equipment Inspection: Eliminate Hidden Hazards in Advance, Ensure Controllability

  1. Conduct a pre-shift daily inspection of the braking system, steering system, and tire pressure to ensure responsive braking, smooth steering without jamming, and no tire damage. Check battery power to avoid insufficient power caused by low-battery driving.
  2. Perform regular maintenance on the hydraulic system to ensure smooth lifting and lowering of the forks without jamming or shaking. Clean debris on the forks in a timely manner to prevent goods from slipping.

Operating Habits: Standardize Operations, Prohibit Violations

  1. Maintain a correct sitting posture while driving, hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands, and keep an eye on the front, the forks, and the surrounding environment. Single-handed operation or distractions are prohibited.
  2. It is strictly forbidden to adjust goods, carry passengers, or use forks to lift personnel for work while the forklift is moving. Reckless operations such as ramming shelves and making sharp turns are strictly prohibited.
